THE OLDEST SECURITY IN LIA MARTADINATA BANDUNG

Our security in LIA has been working in LIA for 20 years!!! His name is Mr. Asep. He is responsible for controlling  the campus of LIA every day although his house is so far from here.

He lives in Bale Endah. He lives with his family. He has dream of becoming a successful person. His hobby is playing football, although he is old enough. But maybe, there will be a miracle for him to be a football player or football coach.

Since he is working in LIA, all is safe. That means, he is a good security and he has polite personality. We think he is a good, funny, polite, and responsible person. He is the BEST security in LIA Martadinata, Bandung

GETTING CLOSER WITH PAK HENDY

Today, I interviewed one of staffs of LIA Martadinata, Bandung. His name is Pak Hendy. I feel happy after this interview because now I know his name, not just a parking man. Before I interviewed him, I thought he was unfriendly, but when I was interviewing him, he is so friendly. Pak Hendy lives in Dago. His house is not far from LIA. I’m not so close to him but I think he is a nice guy.

He told me about his interesting experience. I didn’t think that he had ever joined the singing contest! He joined KDI (Kontes Dangdut Indonesia –red.). It’s maybe because his hobby is singing and I think his favorite genre of music is dangdut, but he told me that he can sing many genres of music.

Pak Hendy expects that LIA will always be the best English course in Bandung.

KANG HIKMAH, THE MULTI-TALLENTED JANITOR

His name is Hikmah, one of the multi-talented janitor of LIA Martadinata. He has worked in LIA since December 9, 2001. It’s been 15 years now! His responsibility is cleaning LIA classrooms and other parts of LIA building.

His hobbies are swimming, cycling, and playing futsal. He is also excellent in drawing. He lives in Soreang with his mother and brother. He has an unforgettable experience with his friends, that is, when they won futsal tournament in 2004. He has a dream if someday he resign from LIA, he wants to make his own business, whatever it is as long as it’s legal and “halal”.

That’s all about Kang Hikmah. We hope Kang Hikmah’s dream comes true.

PEOPLE IN LIA: The Interview (part one)

(An activity of ET-7 students concerning Lesson 8/"People in Our School", page 57 of STAR 3 Book)

Learning is somewhat painful to some students. Being trapped in a small cubical room of 4 to 4 meters is contributing a lot to the boredom. Not to mention the teachers lacking of creativity will eventually  turn the students into learners of the least motivation. We should finally be thankful if they are still willing to stay and continue to study in LIA despite their disappointment and frustration. We surely need a breakthrough; we definitely call for an out of the box idea. 

We had this idea. When we came to Lesson 8 of STAR 3 Book (the book used in LIA for SMP students), we had this topic: PEOPLE IN OUR SCHOOL. The lesson tells of stories depicting job descriptions and daily routines of staffs (both academic and non-academic) in a school. We decided to make it different from other classes of ET-7. 

FIRST THING FIRST

We are going to interview people who are working in LIA (teachers, excluded). Firstly, we are discussing on what questions to ask. We end up with the following simple topics of questions (since most of the non-academic staffs in LIA haven't mastered English yet) such as: 

• Personal identity (name, address, family)
• Job or position in LIA
• Responsibilities (job descriptions)
• Hobbies (likes/dislikes)
• Dreams in the future (what they want to be in the future)
• Etc.

The students are then divided into groups of threes and they are doing the followings:
First, they make up the questions and then they practice the questions with their peers.

In the meantime, the teacher is contacting those people who will be interviewed and telling them that the students will need their time for a simple interview. The teacher gives them excerpts of the questions that the students will ask.

One student will act as an interviewer. His/her main duty is to interview the interviewees.

The last student will have to take pictures and record the activity during the interview.

Preparing Questions and Anwers

First days in class seem fine and full of energy. Yet there are some students who still look worried and in a process of putting themselves together in class and try to fit in. In such circumstances there are not expected to make up a tricky and complex conversation. They are still testing the water. 

Practicing their English, introducing themselves one another

Today, they are only to introduce to one another asking simple questions such as:

1. What's your name?
2. Where do you live?
3. Where do you come from?
4. What do you do?
5. What're your hobbies?
6. What do you want to be someday?

These are the same questions we ask to one of our janitors in our institution (SEE: A Multi-talented janitor who speaks English)

The questions somehow develop to a next stage when the answers are given. The students instinctively ask questions related to the answers they get, making the conversation much longer and more complex since they have made new questions out of the questions we ask them to ask one another. 

The class was fun. Laughter heard everywhere contributes to a less pressure condition making the students feel comfortable and easy to practice their English. 

 

A MULTI-TALENTED JANITOR WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH

A janitor who speaks English? What's so special about it? Well, it is special indeed knowing that this janitor is an Indonesian (and he never goes to an English course) and his education is also very much mediocre but somehow he loves to learn things all by himself. He is an avid learner who wish to always upgrade his skills and knowledge. 

In his leisure time, he indulges himself in shaping his drawing skill. Everyone knows .... the teachers, the staffs, the students, and the parents of the students that he is the one who always sit patiently sketching his ideas to formulate patterns, lines, dots, and colors to form and shape wonderful pictures that amaze the whole people who see it. He is, we think, somebody who deserves more respect and with a better luck and a little hard work, he may end up in a much better place with a better opportunity.

HOW TO SURVIVE A CONVERSATION (Conversation Class)

Oftentimes, the students in our English Classes (even in Conversation Class) find it uneasy to develop a  conversation and to make it last longer. When they have topics in hand, they just skip from one topic to another so quickly and meaningless. They tend to ask just one question for each topic meaning that if they have even 10 topics to discuss, they would complete their conversation in merely less than ONE minute!

Practicing in pairs making a longer and more meaningful conversation

To anticipate this, the students are therefore to encourage to ask more questions to build up a better and more meaningful conversation. When they can ask more questions for each topic, they eventually enhance their speaking ability in terms of fluency. People say "practice makes perfect"; no pain, no gain. Without practicing, they cannot become a fluent speaker of English. Too much theory will kill their inventive creativity.

The following steps may help teachers in giving their students more chances to practice:

FIRST STEPS: Ask the students to list down as many as 3 questions to ask their friends. The questions may vary in topics. Topics which are oftentimes chosen by the students are those dealing with hobbies, sports, music, foods/drinks, celebrities. But sometimes when coming to certain students with special interests, the topics may shift into a more challenging ones such as religion, universe, politics, futuristic concepts, etc. We cannot just limit their creativity and imagination since both are precious assets in enriching the conversation so as to make it more interesting to the both speakers and listeners involved in the conversation.

SECOND STEPS: Say, you have only six students in the classroom. Then they will sit face to face (look at the picture above) to have a conversation. Since each student has made 3 questions by his own, so in each pair then they will have 6 questions to start with. It is certainly more than enough for a 12 minute conversation. The pairs have to make a trivial conversation using the questions they have made. Every 12 minutes the teacher gives a sign that they will have to change partners. Since there are 6 students in the class, each student will have a chance to "make a conversation" with 5 different partners. All in all, they will practice their English in 60 non-stop minutes.

TIPS TO SURVIVE A CONVERSATION:

1. Pick a topic (pick a question).
2. Ask your partner Questions dealing with the topic
3. LISTEN to your partner's ANSWERS
4. USE the ANSWERS for your next questions
5. Go back to number 3
6. If you get bored (with the topic), get stuck (cannot ask more), then go back to number 1
7. Don't give up easily on ONE TOPIC

The teacher has to practice the tips above with the students before they practice by themselves.
